Newfoundland Flag

In case you have not guessed already, I am from Newfoundland! Where is Newfoundland you ask? Well it is an Island on the east coast of Canada! Also known as "THE ROCK"!! We were a colony of England until 1949 when we became part of Canada! The city that I live in is St. John's, and if you visit you will notice that we speak with a pronounced Irish dialect the same is said of many southern communities in Newfoundland. In Northern parts however, you will hear an english dialect.

Visitors to Newfoundland are both amused and charmed by our figures of speech and words we use. Our folklore may seem a little strange to some but it is what makes us different from everywhere else.

Folklore is defined as experience converted into story, song or saying. I will attempt to give you a taste of our folklore from words we use, weather lore, folk medicines, omens, superstitions and customs. Below you will find some links to pages that I have created to show you some of our special folklore.

Cabot Tower Cabot Tower, on Signal Hill in St. John's, overlooks the St. John's harbour. Slightly East of due South, visitors to the site can see Cape Spear, the most Easterly point in North America, and its lighthouse. Building began in 1897 to commemorate both Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee and the 400th anniversary of John Cabot's (Giovanni Caboto) voyage to the New World, it was completed in 1900 and has been a part of many historic events. In 1901 it stood witness to possibly the most important accomplishment in modern communications - the reception of the first wireless transatlantic signal by Guglielmo Marconi.

Iceburgs Here in Newfoundland icebergs are common. It isn't very often that we don't get any in the spring and early summer. Here are pictures of some icebergs that we have had. They look beautiful but they sure make the weather cold!

Located on the west coast of Newfoundland Gros Morne National Park is nationally and internationally recognized. In 1987, it became a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural organization (UNESCO). It has some of the most beautiful sites I have ever seen. Here are some pictures of Gros Morne. Grose Morne

Dogs The Newfoundland Dog is one of our most prize positions! Here are some pictures of these beautiful animals!!
